Obituary
Janet Ann Johnston, 64, of Burton, TX passed away early Friday, January 24, in Houston after a short illness, with her husband, Steven Johnston, by her side.
Janet was born in Orange, TX, the daughter of Cedric & Delma (Courville) Stout, of Bridge City TX. She was raised in Bridge City where she sang in choir from sixth grade through high school. She continued to sing in church wherever she lived and played piano and guitar. Janet loved music, singing, and dancing. She attended Tarleton State intending to become a music teacher. Janet was a longtime resident of the DFW area, then Weatherford, Waller, and her dream ranch home in Wyoming. She and husband Steve moved to Burton in 2021 where they continued a cow-calf operation. She loved ranching and horses and was an excellent rider. In addition, she had dogs, goats, laying hens and rabbits. She was a capable farm equipment operator and could fix what needed fixing. She said, “you can’t beat the farmer out of me!” Her annual vegetable and flower gardens were a testament to her hard work and green thumb.
Janet was a loving and selfless wife, mother, grandmother (Mimi) and a dedicated sister to her eight siblings, often hosting family events. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Denise Faye Evavold, as well as daughter Amy Elysee Melnick. She is survived by her husband Steven Johnston, and children Michael Melnick, Burton, Jeff Melnick & wife Alysia, Hockley, Jarrod Johnston & wife Abbie, Keller; Kristen Crow & husband Mark, Irving; Kimberly Dawn, Plano; and grandchildren Isaac, Annabelle, Hannah, Caleb, Addison Rylee and JD. Also surviving Janet are her siblings Shirley Harmes & husband Ed, Georgetown; Julie Pike & husband Gordon, Fayetteville AR; Gerald Stout & wife Pam, North Richland Hills; Darlene Montagne & husband Johnny, Bridge City; twin sister Janine Carter & husband Gary, Waller; Daniel Stout & wife Lisa, Little Elm; Theresa Hock, Corinth, as well as many nieces and nephews, and friends from everywhere she has been, whose hearts Janet touched.
No memorial event is planned at this time.
