Obituary
James Ray McClanahan, age 75, passed away on October, 28, 2024.
James, known to most as Jamie, was born to Thomas E. and Elizabeth (Worcester) McClanahan on March 13, 1949 in Harlingen, Texas. Jamie was raised in La Feria, Texas and graduated from High School there. At a young age Jamie was in boxing, played the piano and played the saxophone. Following in his father's footsteps, Jamie became a skilled pipefitter, eventually attending trade school. He worked in the field for a while, then took on a new adventure managing produce farms in Mexico, where he earned the nickname "Primo.” He had many great adventures during this time in Mexico but ultimately left the produce fields to return to his pipefitting career.
Jamie met the love of his life, Paula House, on a blind date. They both desperately tried to get out of the date but were unsuccessful. Upon meeting, they fell in love and married just a few months later on July 5, 1969, in Harlingen. They were married for 52 beautiful years. They were blessed with a daughter, Tamara Rae, who brought immense joy to their lives. Jamie was her biggest cheerleader, often heard from the stands at her dance and sporting events, yelling, “That’s my baby!” or “I love you more!” Together, the family created cherished memories traveling across Texas in the summers, especially enjoying the gulf beaches, with Port Aransas holding a special place in their hearts. Music was a cornerstone of their family life; Jamie and Paula often sang along to their favorite country legends during car rides and at home. They also loved to sit around the piano together and play songs. Jamie had a love for all things outdoors, spending many weekends at the deer lease or outside on his back patio. He loved to entertain and cook for his family and friends. He was then blessed with the name "Pop" by his grandchildren, whom he adored and loved to spoil with candy.
Jamie was known for his vibrant personality and funny sayings that will be fondly remembered, including, “Monkeys dead. Show’s over!” and “Don’t take any wooden nickels.”
Jamie is preceded in death by Tom and Elizabeth McClanahan, L.W. and Zollie House and his wife, Paula House McClanahan.
Left to cherish his memory is daughter Tamara and Thiess Cunningham; grandchildren Kenlee, Hayes and Leighton Cunningham; sister Tommie Kay and husband Jim; brother in law Lawson House and wife Carolyn House, brother in law Dennis House and wife Karen House, along with many other cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
In accordance with his wishes, Jamie was cremated. His family is planning a service to celebrate his life on December 5, 2024 at 2:00 pm in Wimberley at the First Baptist Church.
Services are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham, TX 77833. 979.836.3611 Memories may be shared at www.brenhammemorialchapel.com.
