Obituary

Gladys L. Wagner Schwarze, 86, of Brenham passed away Monday, April 5, 2010.

Gladys was born June 25, 1923 in Independence, Texas to parents Willie and Clara (Moehlmann) Wagner. On August 5, 1923 she was baptized by Pastor Dziewas and confirmed April 10, 1938 by Pastor Gogolin both in St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. On February 12, 1942 she was united in marriage to John W. Schwarze by Pastor Gogolin also in St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. She attended Independence and Prairie Hill Schools and graduated from Brenham High School.

Gladys was employed at the Brenham Saddle Shop for forty-nine years, until shortly before her death. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill since 1942, being a member of Sandy Hill Women of the Church and Cheer Chairman along with delivering church service tapes to shut-ins. Gladys helped organize the Independence school reunion and was instrumental with getting a historical marker for Independence. She enjoyed caring for her roses, baking sweets for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, enjoyed listening to radio broadcasts of Washington County Little League, Brenham Cubs and Astros sports.

She was preceded in death by parents Willie and Clara Wagner, husband John W. Schwarze, brothers Henry and Woodrow Wagner, sister Lucille Crawford, parents-in-law John and Minnie Schwarze, brothers-in-law Herbert Crawford, Emil J. Schwarze, Reinhold Gaskamp, sisters-in-law Kathryn Schwarze, Margaret Wagner, Norma Gaskamp and nephews Woodrow “Bubba” Wagner, Allen Conklin, Roger Hannath, Waldo Moehlmann and George Gaskamp.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law Alice and Don Studhalter and Helen and David Nowicki; 6 grandchildren Mace Studhalter, Miles Studhalter Joni (Blake) Leonard, Marty Nowicki, Dustin (Heidi) Nowicki, Dathan (Jenny) Nowicki; 7 great grandchildren Kaylee and Kaden Leonard, Trey and Caroline Nowicki, Tye Studhalter, Chasidy Nowicki, Hannah Nowicki (expected to arrive in August), 7 nieces Judy Reynolds, Marilyn McLaughlin, Nancy Wagner, Suzanne Hannath, Mary Ann (J.T.) Grounds, Cindy (Pete) Gedraitis, Marie Moehlmann; 3 nephews Douglas (Kathy) Schwarze, David (Bessie) Schwarze and Lee (Judy) Crawford; numerous great nieces and great nephews; family friends Joseph Espinda, Tammy, Taylor, C.J. and Brooklyn Orr, Amy Studhalter, Amanda Nowicki, Evelyn Lorenz, Corine Niemeyer, Mildred Urbanosky, Edna Schroeder, Willie Mae Nutt and Eileen Glenz.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, 2010 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 8 in St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill with Pastor Jim Abbott officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Nutt, Neil Nutt, Rona Nutt, Ross Nutt, Boyd Nutt, Edward Scheffer, Billy Scheffer and Stanley Sommer.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill or Hospice.
