Obituary

David Randall Patterson, 85, of Brenham, passed away on September 9, 2023. David was born on July 23, 1938, in Woodsboro, Texas to Floyd and Ruth Patterson.

In his school years while growing up in Houston, David was an accomplished athlete with basketball being his favorite. His junior high school teams won city championships. His love of sports was a mainstay his entire life. In his young adult life, he continued to play sports on weekends with friends and family. As one might imagine, David was an avid fan – of both professional and amateur sports. He watched sports on TV, in person, and would talk with anyone about sports who would listen. He could recall sports facts that he accumulated throughout his life. He was a HUGE Texas A&M Aggies sports fan.

From the time his kids were old enough to play in organized sports, David was right with them, helping them get better and participating in team activities. This led David to his second career: coaching youth sports. He managed boy’s baseball and football teams, coached boys and girls basketball teams and umpired Little League baseball. The teams he coached were often successful. His love of sports, his knowledge and experience and love and interest in the kids brought out the best in his teams. The kids loved playing for Coach Patterson. After his family, his “second career” of coaching youth sports was a true legacy in his life.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ruth Patterson; and brothers, Thomas and Michael. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carol Patterson; their four sons Mike (Marie), Randy (Kathy), Mark (Wendy) and Joe; brother, Daniel (Beth); Grandchildren, Kristi Vaughn (Cody), Brian Patterson, Quinn Patterson and Joely Patterson; and Great-Grandchildren, Ashton Vaughn and Kaitlyn Vaughn.

A visitation for David will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023, from 10 am to 11am at Brenham Memorial Chapel located at 2300 Stringer Street, Brenham, Texas. The funeral service will begin at 11 am. The inurnment will be determined at a later date.
